The International Coach Federation defines coaching in the following way: “Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.”

Coaching differs from Counseling, Mentoring, Consulting and Psycho Therapy. Coaches are not required to be experts in the field of their clients, for their clients are the ones who possess their answers, nor do coaches deal with psychological problems. A Coach holds a client accountable for outcomes (which they come up with).

Why Coaching?

Coaching can be of benefit in the following cases:
• Finding the right fit for clients in their professional and personal lives
• Providing support for clients wanting to move to another level in their lives
• Providing support for clients who are desirous of finding their life’s purpose
• Supporting clients in overcoming self-limiting beliefs
• Holding clients accountable for changes they are desirous of making
• Assisting a client through a difficult transition or specific situation
• Assisting a client in getting unstuck

It is not uncommon for someone who has worked with a “Life Coach” to change professions, or venture out in a totally opposite direction from which they were previously heading. The reason for this is the nature of the “profession” for helping others find their own paths, and not for giving them advice on how to stay on the path they are on (although, this may be their path). The profession of Coaching is grounded in authenticity. It encourages and facilitates clients to find their “true selves.” There are also those who have peaked in their current professions because coaching has helped to unearth self- limiting beliefs or attitudes.

It must be emphasised that Coaching is for those who are ready to move forward and to “do the work” required to change their lives. A coach does not tell the client what to do, but facilitates self-discovery and creates awareness for the client, thereby empowering the client. The process is client-driven. Ideally, the client should need a coach less over time.
